In October, our Shelter Director, Suzanne Palmer, traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent Crisis Line & Safe House at an event hosted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The purpose of the event was to bring awareness to our Congressional leaders about the dangers of firearms, especially for domestic violence victims. Here’s a message from Suzanne about her trip along with a PSA she filmed while she was in D.C.
I’m from Georgia, and work at Crisis Line & Safe House, a domestic violence prevention organization. I was in Washington, DC in October for Domestic Violence Awareness month to share the stories I’ve gathered while working with domestic violence survivors and advocates in my local community of Macon.

I know how guns in the hands of a domestic abuser can turn a bad situation into a heartbreaking lethal encounter – and the victims are our mothers, our sisters, our daughters, our friends. Women are murdered by an intimate partner with a gun in America each and every day — but it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s why dozens of survivors, advocates, and supporters like you came together to demand action from elected leaders to prevent gun violence and save women’s lives.
We know how to save so many of these women. We know that in states that require a background check for gun purchases, 38 percent fewer women are murdered by an intimate partner with a firearm. Sharing this message is so important, and it makes your commitment during Domestic Violence Awareness Month especially meaningful. There’s still more to be done, and we’re going to need your help.
