Our History

CL&SH was born of a merger between the Crisis Line of Middle Georgia, founded in 1978, and The Salvation Army Safe House of Macon, founded in 2000. The Crisis Line of Middle Georgia was founded as a suicide hotline and later began offering sexual assault advocacy services via the hotline and in the local hospitals and assistance with temporary protective orders. In the late 1990s, a group of concerned citizens began looking for a way to help victims fleeing violence in their homes. Using funds from individual donors, a group of volunteers from the Junior League of Macon, Christ Episcopal Church, and The Salvation Army opened the safe house in Macon under the umbrella of The Salvation Army.

In 2005, the two organizations joined their efforts to aid survivors in our community and merged to become Crisis Line & Safe House of Central Georgia. The organization has grown to include a 24-hour crisis hotline, a confidentially located shelter, two sexual assault centers staffed with specially-trained nurses and advocates, a legal services division staffed with a staff attorney and legal advocates, and an in-house counseling center offering one-on-one therapy and support groups. CL&SH is also the fiscal agent, lead organization, and anchor partner for One Safe Place Macon Family Justice Center, which will be opening in Macon in 2025 and will revolutionize the way victims and survivors are provided care and services in our community.
